Maine is the northeastern-most state in the US and is a part of the region known as “New England” which is a cluster of states in the North East. Maine is known as “The Pine State” due to its abundance of Pine trees. The pine tree is an important icon in Maine as they are represented on the State flag, Seal and quarter. Maine is also known as the “Vacations State”, as it surprisingly has 3,166 off shore islands, with about 30% being larger than an acre. In 2014, Maine had an estimated population of 1,330,089. Major cities include Augusta, Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor. The department of transportation is known as Maine Department of Transportation or MaineDOT. As a state with over 3,478 miles of coastline, many of Maine’s landmarks are lighthouses, marshes, and ships/boats. Some of Maine’s biggest attractions are boating and white water rafting, in addition to great lobster.
