Alaska is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Alaska, also known as, “The Last Frontier” Alaska had an estimated population of 736,732 as of 2014. Major cities include Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. The Transportation Department is called Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF). A popular highway to travel in Alaska is A 1-4. Alaska is mostly known for its beautiful scenery and animal watching due to its location as a polar state. Alaska is home to a number of glaciers and over 70 volcanoes that make for excellent views during road trips. A popular attraction of Alaska is whale watching, often hosted by the Glacier Bay National Park & Reserve. Tourist typically arrive to these locations via ferry or plane. On the Alaskan highway lies the Soldiers Summit, a site where the Alaskan Military Highway was officially opened in 1942.
