BMW has invented a new type of headlight to replace the LED headlight — laser headlights.

Headlights Used Today

  • Tungsten Halogen

Tungsten Halogen gives off a warm, yellow hue in color.

  • HID (Xenon)

HID headlights have been in production since 1991 and have commonly been used in higher end vehicles. They give off a cool blue hue in color.

  • LED (Light-Emitting Diodes)

LED technology began in 2004 in regards to automobiles. The first car factory to install this technology was in the Lexus LS in 2007 for the 2008 model. LED lights are now used in more than automobile headlights – ranging from brake lamps and turn signals to parking lamps. LED gives off a cool light with less blue than HID.

BMW has come up with new technology that will further the precision in automobile headlights.

  • Laser headlights are more powerful and efficient than their LED counterpoint.  The laser headlight is safer than LED lights because it is filtered through a florescent phosphor material, which alters the color from blue to white.

The illumination that comes from the headlight is indirect and creates a pure, white light, which is pleasant and easy on the eyes.

Lasers give off a coherent beam, removing the necessity to have different light configurations for high beam, side illumination and forward illumination.

How will this affect you?

This will not only likely change car designs, but will also increase the cost of vehicles that will use this new technology in their headlights.
