Indiana is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern and Great Lakes regions of North America. Indiana is known as the Hoosier State and in 2014, had an estimated population of 6,596,855. There are many conflicting stories of where the name “Hoosiers” came from, but it is known as an Indian term and has been recognized since 1837. Major cities are Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Michigan City and Evansville. The department of transportation is called Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Indiana is most famous for The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. Racing is a major past time in the Hoosier state, where tracks are very common throughout the state. Indiana also has a historic district which includes three parks, two museums and 24 monuments, statues and sculptures. Located in downtown Indiana, there are dedications such as Indiana World War Memorial, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial, American Legion Mall and the Veterans Memorial Plaza.
