The inside of your car could be taking on a completely new look in the near future with a whole suite of updated functionality to go with it. The reason being is that Google is looking to make a big push into the auto industry. By now everyone has heard of Google’s self-driving cars, which is a big part of their automotive plans moving forward, but in 2015 it appears that they’re going to be dealing more on the software side.

While nothing is confirmed yet, least of all by Google, sources close to the company are claiming that they’re working on a car infotainment system. The in vehicle infotainment system, or IVI, would run on Android and be tied directly into the cars systems. Since none of this is official, the exact features of the system haven’t been laid out yet. But it has been described as the entire car becoming an extension of the driver’s phone. No mobile phone needed. While this may seem vague, the Android IVI does have several specific caveats at the moment. Presently, the Android infotainment system doesn’t boot as fast as real time alternatives. Think of starting up your phone—there’s a delay, usually around 30 seconds, before you’re able to use it. Car makers aren’t happy with the delay and it’s reasonable to think neither would their consumers. Besides that many automakers are hesitant to incorporate Google’s system into their vehicles. The reason being that the Android IVI would be deeply rooted in the car’s system and able to collect all manner of information about the driver which would be fed into Google’s data driven ad machine.

All of these caveats can succinctly be narrowed down to the system’s main issue: it’s just not ready. But if these sources are to believed they are working on it and once more of the kinks are ironed out there’s a good chance the Android IVI will become a mainstay in the auto industry.
