Louisiana is a state located in the southern region of the United States. Louisiana is known as the Pelican State, the Pelican is also the official state bird. In 2014, Louisiana had an estimated population of 4,413,457. A major Highway is Louisiana is Highway I-12, I-10, I-55, and I-59. The transportation department is known as The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD).  The French Quarter is the oldest and most famous neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana. Many of the buildings date from before New Orleans became part of the United States. New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebration is centered here–especially on Bourbon and Canal Street. Louisiana is home to over 50 historic landmarks and homes of significant people, many of which contributed greatly to the history of Louisiana. Louisiana is home to over 1600 lakes, however the Caddoo Lake is consider the “Most Beautiful Lake in America” by some. The Calcasieu Lake, Cane River Lake, and Lake D’argonne rank among the best lakes in Louisiana.
