What this guide covers

Each spring through summer, hundreds of thousands of service members and their families execute a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), and many of them ship at least one vehicle in the process. This guide breaks down the largest U.S. military installations by active-duty population, explains which corridors see the most base-to-base car shipping volume, and points you to specific guides for each of the major bases we serve.

Direct Connect Auto Transport is veteran-owned, A+ BBB rated, and has been moving vehicles for military families for over 24 years (USDOT 2823098). We offer military discounts for active duty, reserve, National Guard, and veteran customers across all branches. Get a free quote in under two minutes or call (800) 980-2222.

Quick reference: the largest U.S. military bases by active-duty population

Camp Pendleton Oceanside, CA ~49,000 (Marines and Sailors) Marines

Note on naming: Fort Bragg was renamed Fort Liberty in 2023, then renamed back to Fort Bragg in early 2025 (this time honoring Pvt. First Class Roland L. Bragg, a WWII Distinguished Service Cross recipient). Fort Hood was renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023, then renamed back to Fort Hood in June 2025. We use the current official names in this guide and capture both legacy and current search behavior in dedicated guides for each base.

How PCS season affects car shipping demand

PCS season runs roughly May through August, peaking in June and July. During this window, demand for vehicle transport at all major bases tightens and rates climb 10 to 15 percent above off-peak. The mechanics of why:

  • Carrier capacity is finite. A given carrier can only run so many loads in a season. When everyone PCSing wants pickup the same week, the math doesn’t work.
  • Pickup windows extend. A 1 to 3 day window in February might become a 3 to 5 day window in late June.
  • Route imbalance. Some PCS corridors run heavily one direction, leaving carriers with lighter return loads and tighter pickup availability on the popular direction.

The single best move you can make if you know your PCS dates: book 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Earlier booking gives you tighter pickup windows, better rates, and time to handle anything that goes sideways.

Base-specific car shipping guides

Each major base has its own quirks: gate access, pickup logistics, branch-specific PCS timing, and OCONUS connection patterns. Direct Connect has dedicated guides for the four biggest:

Additional bases we serve regularly with dedicated content in development: Joint Base Lewis-McChord (WA), JBSA (TX), Fort Bliss (TX), Fort Campbell (KY/TN), Fort Carson (CO), Fort Stewart (GA), MCAS Miramar (CA), NAS Jacksonville (FL), NAS Pensacola (FL), MacDill AFB (FL), and Patrick Space Force Base (FL).

What service members should know about gate access for car shipping

A common question: can a 75-foot car carrier just drive onto base for pickup or delivery?

Generally no. Most major military installations restrict commercial vehicle access. Carriers can’t pull onto a base without significant escort and paperwork, and most haven’t gone through that process for a single PCS pickup. Standard practice across all major bases:

  • Meet the carrier at a parking lot or shopping center near a main gate
  • Or coordinate at the service member’s residential address (on-base housing pickup is rarely allowed for commercial carriers, but off-base housing is straightforward)
  • Confirm pickup logistics with your broker before dispatch so there are no surprises

The good news: this is routine. Every major base has nearby parking lots, shopping centers, or commercial areas where carriers stage pickups every day. We coordinate the meeting point with you in advance.

OCONUS PCS: when government covers your vehicle

For OCONUS (overseas) PCS moves, the U.S. military covers shipment of one personally-owned vehicle through a Vehicle Processing Center. The two main VPC networks:

  • West Coast VPCs handle Pacific destinations (Hawaii, Japan, Korea, Guam)
  • East Coast VPCs handle Atlantic destinations (Germany, Italy, Spain, UK)

The government-covered shipment includes ocean transport. Inland transport from your home or current duty station to the VPC is typically your responsibility unless your branch authorizes specific coordination. Direct Connect handles VPC inland transport routinely, plus the second-vehicle commercial move when service members ship a second vehicle.

Common OCONUS connections:
JBSA, Fort Bliss, Fort Hood (TX) to West Coast VPC for Hawaii or Pacific destinations
Fort Liberty, Naval Station Norfolk (Atlantic) to East Coast VPC for European destinations
Camp Pendleton, Naval Base San Diego (CA) directly to West Coast VPC for Pacific destinations

Why veteran ownership matters for PCS shipping

PCS deadlines aren’t flexible. The auto transport industry has its share of brokers who quote a low number, take a deposit, and then either disappear or call asking for more money the day before pickup. Military families with hard report dates are especially exposed to that pattern.

What we do differently as a veteran-owned company:

  • PCS-aware scheduling. “Report by August 1” means the vehicle has to arrive earlier, not on the date itself. We build buffer into pickup and delivery scheduling.
  • Honest pricing on first contact. No bait quote. The number we quote is the number you pay.
  • Documentation help. We coordinate paperwork that supports PPM (Personally Procured Move) reimbursement claims.
  • Real military discounts. Active duty, reserve, National Guard, and veterans across all branches receive a discount applied automatically when service status is confirmed.
  • OCONUS coordination. For your second vehicle when the government covers your first, we handle the commercial side smoothly.

Frequently asked questions about military base car shipping

Which U.S. military base sees the most PCS car shipping volume?

By active-duty population, Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) is the largest single Army installation in the country with roughly 52,000 active-duty personnel. By daily on-base population including all support roles, Naval Station Norfolk hits ~60,000+ daily. Both generate substantial PCS-related vehicle shipping volume year-round, peaking May through August.

Does the military pay for CONUS PCS car shipping?

For domestic (CONUS) PCS moves, the military typically does not cover vehicle shipping. Service members usually arrange transport out of pocket and may receive partial mileage reimbursement under Personally Procured Move (PPM) rules. For OCONUS (overseas) PCS moves, the government covers shipping of one POV through a Vehicle Processing Center.

When should I book my PCS car shipment?

Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead during peak PCS season (May through August). For non-peak windows, 2 to 3 weeks is usually enough. Earlier booking gives more flexibility on pickup timing and better rates. Last-minute PCS bookings often pay 15 to 25 percent more.

Can carriers pick up directly at the base?

Generally no. Most major installations restrict commercial vehicle access for security reasons. Standard practice is to meet at a parking lot or shopping center near a main gate, or at your off-base residential address. We coordinate the meeting point with you in advance.

Do you offer military discounts?

Yes. Direct Connect offers military discounts for active duty, reserve, National Guard, and veteran customers across all branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, Coast Guard). Mention your service status when you request a quote.

Can you handle OCONUS connections?

Yes. For OCONUS PCS moves, we coordinate inland transport from your origin to the appropriate Vehicle Processing Center, plus the second-vehicle commercial move if you ship a second vehicle. Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, Japan, and Korea OCONUS connections are routine.

What if my orders change at the last minute?

PCS orders shift more often than most people realize. We work with that. If you need to reschedule pickup or change destination, contact us as soon as you know. The earlier you flag a change, the more flexibility we have to adjust.

How do I get a real PCS car shipping quote?

Use our online quote form for an instant estimate based on current market rates. The form asks for origin ZIP, destination ZIP, vehicle year/make/model, and approximate pickup date. Direct Connect quotes are based on real carrier data, with military discount applied when service status is confirmed. Or call (800) 980-2222.
