If you are trying to buy a used car, always make sure it is from a legitimate seller. There are many scams out there, especially from online sellers. Always be sure to do your research on both the car and the seller. It is best to buy a used car from someone that you know. However, if you do not know anyone willing to sell a car, you can try finding a car from a car dealer, eBay or another online marketplace.

Car Dealer – You can go to a car dealer near you who specifically sells used cars. There are also car dealers that sell both new and used cars. The nice thing about buying a car in person is that you can test the car right there to see if it works as the ad mentions. When purchasing online, you do not really know the full condition of the car.

Ebay – eBay has become a large market for buying and selling cars. Exercise caution when picking a car from eBay, as many sellers can be exaggerating the truth. Only go with a seller who has positive reviews, and be sure to get the carfax before purchase. This will tell you about any accidents, floods or anything else with the car’s condition that the seller may not be disclosing.

Craigslist or Other Online Marketplaces –  When purchasing a car from Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace or another local marketplace, you should always be skeptical of the seller. Always meet the seller in a public place and bring a friend. Ask for the car’s records and also ask why they are selling. You should also get the seller’s I.D. and proof of insurance – then ask to test drive the car. Check all the functions of the car and even take the car on the highway. Do not try to negotiate with the seller like they are a car dealer but also know what the car is worth. If you see the same car sold for cheaper online, you can tell the seller. You should also never bring cash with you, and offer to meet the seller at the bank if you decide to purchase the car. If you have a bad feeling about the seller, just walk away.

When making a final decision on your car, always go with your gut instinct. If the seller seems too pushy or that they are lying, go to another seller. There are plenty of other car sellers that are more trustworthy and will not make you feel like you are buying into a scam.
