1. The first thing to do when transporting a vehicle overseas, is compare shipping quotes from auto shippers who specialize in transporting vehicles overseas. There are specific places where shippers usually ship their vehicles from (San Francisco, Jacksonville, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Wilmington). If you have a large vehicle you may be charged extra for port transportation and ship storage.

2. Remember to double check and submit all of the require paperwork to the auto transport company. Paperwork usually includes two notarized copies of the title, a shipper export declaration form and a declaration of dangerous goods form and a letter from the lien holder if there is one.

3. You will want to contact your insurance company to see if your policy covers overseas auto transport and if it does you will have to add shipping insurance. The usual cost to add shipping insurance to your policy can be anywhere from 1 ½ and 2 ½ percent of your vehicle’s estimated value. If you do need to add shipping insurance it can usually be acquired through the company you choose to ship your vehicle.

4. Like all vehicles that are shipped whether it be nationally or internationally, from San Juan or Detroit, we always recommend cleaning the inside and outside of your vehicle. Do a once over  of the vehicle and check the fluids, tires, battery and also that your tank is a quarter full or less. Remove any loose items inside or any exterior parts that may get damaged during shipping. Double check to make sure all electronics and personal items are removed from the vehicle because the shipper in not responsible for them.
