Here’s the start of some good news coming out of Detroit. The US Department of Transportation has recently rewarded Detroit a $25.9 million grant to purchase 50 new buses. This is great idea for Detroit for a bevy of reasons. It means new job opportunities for drivers and a less expensive way to get around for Detroit citizens. The grant was awarded through the Federal Transit Authority’s “Ladders of Opportunity” program which is a 100 million initiative which was announced earlier this year.

The purpose of Ladders of Opportunity is to fund important transit projects which will in turn help disadvantaged or low-income citizens get to work. The Michigan Department of Transportation is matching 20% of the grant so, all in all, the Detroit Department of Transportation will be receiving up to $32.375 million. Right now, the Detroit District of Transportation has a fleet of 421 buses but right now over 150 of them have exceeded their usefulness. Also hurting their public transportation is the fact that Detroit has cut 30% of its service since 2010 due to reliability issues.

All we know is that for Detroit auto transporters delivering vehicles door-to-door, improving public transportation sounds great!
