For many, motorcycles are still seen as vehicles which are inextricably tied to personal harm and injury, but what about a motorcycle designed to save lives? That’s the main idea behind Eli Beer’s ambucycles. Eli Beer is the founder of United Hatzalah, a group of 2,000 volunteers operating out of Israel, that provide first response medical care. Growing up in Jerusalem, Eli Beer spent some time working as a volunteer ambulance driver. He found that whenever he was truly needed it took too long for his ambulance to arrive due to traffic and other factors. It was these heartbreaking and frustrating experiences that lead to ambucycles and United Hatzalah.

With the use of their first response motorcycles the volunteer group manages to responds to any medical incident within 2-4 minutes, sometimes faster. Once on the scene United Hatzalah medics treat and stabilize the patient until the ambulance crew arrives, which is usually between 8-10 minutes after the initial call for help.

The example being set by United Hatzalah is one many other countries are looking at in inspiration and some time in the near future, ambucycles may become a common sight. You can learn more about United Hatzalah on their website and view Eli Beer’s TED Talk below.
