The massive storm Jonas slams the East coast, killing 31 people. 1500 flights were delayed due to the extreme weather conditions, but airports are now continuing to recover for lost time. Some of the most snow accounted for was in The Eastern Panhandle in West Virginia had 42 inches of snow in Glengarry, while Shepherdstown had 40.5 inches.

 

The JFK airport in NYC had 30.1 inches, cancelling many flights. Central Park in New York City almost hit its all-time storm record by 1/10th of an inch at 26.8 inches. Emergency snow laborers in NYC helped to dig out snow from fire hydrants, bus stops and crosswalks.

 

As for traffic conditions across the country, the Pennsylvania Turnpike just started picking up again On January 24th, after a complete standstill for almost 24 hours. This included about 500 vehicles on a 7 mile stretch. NYC was under a travel ban, allowing only emergency vehicles on the streets. Maryland closed a 35 mile stretch on a highway from 1-270 to 1-70.

 

Sleet and freezing rain may affect the East coast for the days to come, causing slippery roads, and tough traffic conditions.
