We’ve all made long trips that involved going through tunnels and entering their darkened confines only to reemerge into the light at the end. But what if there was a moving tunnel above the street, riding along just like the cars below it? That is something that people in China may be dealing with sooner rather than later. Of course, it’s more than just a tunnel. China is calling it a “Land Airbus” and it could very well be the next big thing in public transportation.

The “Land Airbus” is a large bus that will travel over the roads in China, allowing cars to pass beneath it while holding up to 1,400 passengers. The bus will travel along rails mounted to existing roads, holding it up over the road and allowing cars to pass underneath. While this may be a new wave of public transportation, the idea of a moving tunnel can certainly be unsettling for a lot of drivers. However, being able to move 1,400 people about a city without impacting the traffic and with relatively little spending is something that every major city will have to consider should it prove to be successful in China.
