The self-driving car and similar types of technology are an inevitable part of the future. There are constantly news stories about another auto manufacturer or tech company joining the ranks of the automated car industry and looking for the next big breakthrough. Check out our take on the future of automated driving for insights into how self-driving technology will improve safety. Many people have wondered if self-driving cars and the associated technology will cause more problems than it solves. However, there have been examples of self-driving cars successfully traveling across the country and testing has been mostly free of accidents with only a few cases of self-driving cars being unable to avoid a collision.

In fact, a recent video has surfaced- taken from the dash of a Tesla Model S- in which the autopilot kicked in and was able to save the car and driver from a collision with a utility truck on the highway. The IIHS reported almost 45,000 motor vehicles involved collisions in 2014 with a similar number expected in 2015, although data is still being aggregated. It has been estimated that automatic brake systems may save up to of 2,000 lives per year and autopilot features that help drivers avoid collisions may save even more lives by cutting down on collisions and reducing the number of vehicles involved. Autopilot features will be a tremendous boon to the entire transportation industry as well as improving personal travel by cutting down on delays due to collisions and helping drivers navigate unfamiliar territory. Check out the video below to see the entire incident caught by the camera on the Model S.
