North Carolina is a US State located in the south eastern region of the country. It is known as the “Tar Heel” state and as of 2014, North Carolina had an estimated population of 9,943,964. Major cities include Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro. The department of transportation is called The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The Outer Banks is a 200-mile long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and includes a small portion of Virginia, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a United States National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the ridge line of the Great Smoky Mountains. The French Broad River flows 213 miles from near the village of Rosman in Transylvania County, North Carolina, into the state of Tennessee. Its confluence with the Holston River at Knoxville is the beginning of the Tennessee River.
