North

Due to heat waves happening in the North in areas like New York, many outdoor events have been cancelled. The 16th annual NYC triathlon has been cancelled due to extreme heat according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are going to reach greater than 90 degrees, and “cooling centers” have been opened in 5 areas in NYC. People of all ages are affected by the extreme weather conditions, especially the elderly.

South

A Florida Earthquake happened over the past week that was due to a 10,000 pound Navy bomb. The earthquake had a 3.7 magnitude and was 168 nautical miles off the coast of Daytona Beach. Shock testing was done to make sure animals and species nearby were not harmed in the process.

Midwest

Severe storms are continuing throughout the Midwest from North Dakota to Iowa. In the plains area they are expecting damaging high winds, heavy rain, and possible tornadoes. If you are transporting your car through this area, check in continuously on the weather conditions. Aside from the earthquake, Saharan dust is sweeping through South Florida creating heavy rainfall and winds up to 40 mph. This, however, is lowering the threat for tropical storms during this hurricane season.

West

Weather in California for this week will average in the 80s. Due to temperatures soaring to 96 degrees around the mountains, air quality will be poor. A smoke advisory will be issued in areas of the dessert from the sand fire. Currently, the Sand Fire burned more than 30,000 acres near Santa Clarita. The fire still continues, as dozens of firefighters are on duty to contain the fire. Temperatures in these areas will reach 102 degrees and have high winds with about 45 mph. From California to Arizona, heat waves will be expected for the week.
