As time marches steadily forward, so does the self-driving car. Pretty soon they’ll be known as a legion because it’s nearly impossible for those tapped into the auto industry to go a month without hearing about developments concerning one. We already brought you the news on Delphi’s self driving car completing a cross country road trip. Now we’ve heard word that Honda has joined the list of companies testing self-driving cars in California. There are ten companies included so far. You can see the full list of companies here.

Honda joined this list without much fanfare but you may remember that last summer they showed off their prototype Acura RLX which was modified to operate as an autonomous vehicle. But this has been the first we’ve heard of their self-driving car plans since then.

In related news, there has been a big push by car safety advocates in the use of automatic brakes in self-driving cars. These brake systems would automatically apply if the car is about to collide with a car or any other object. It has been estimated that automatic braking systems such as these could prevent a large amount of rear-end collisions that result in close to 2,000 deaths each year.

Anything that makes the road safer, be it self-driving cars or automatic brakes, sounds good to us. Reducing the amount of death and injury caused by human error should be one of the automotive industry’s top goals. But in doing so, preventing more accidents and collisions will mean better commutes for summer vacations, work trips and of course car and freight transportation. The differences should be even more profound in California and we look forward to seeing how it affects San Francisco auto transportation service as well as San Jose car transportation service.
